The spherical aberration brings a magical and mysterious feeling I usually like to portray in my photographs. Playing with both the soft focus and the soap bubble effect was a very fun experience.

Multi-coated glass optics allow vibrant colors and light vignetting toward the edge of the frame, helping draw the viewer’s attention to the crisp and focused area of the photograph.

The soft focus just sets this lens apart from any modern lens. Although it is obviously a lens for mirrorless cameras, it brings the analogue vibe to your photos that modern lenses just don’t really have. They feel overly sharp and lack character and intrigue that older analogue lenses had.

Greatly inspired by history our lens references both the ancient knowledge of Ibn al-Haytham and the Cooke Triplet lens design. Constructed using five elements in three groups, more optical aberrations can be corrected than with single elements for a greater variety of effects.

What I liked the most about it was being able to create really unique images. I’ve never found a similar lens, it creates a “glow“ effect in the lights that is almost impossible to achieve when shooting in natural conditions.

Story

Cast an irresistible spell of dazzling light and bring your stories to life with the world’s first full-frame mirrorless lens fully dedicated to spherical aberration control. Paying homage to the enthralling history of a fascinating scientist, Ibn al-Haytham, who lived around 1021 in Cairo, Egypt, our lens offers a visual experience that breaks free from the constraints of standard modern lenses. Optimized for creative photography and videography, the Nour Triplet V 2.0/64 Bokeh Control Art Lens empowers photographers and videographers to capture three distinct image styles in one lens: alluring soft-focus, classic diffused backdrops or powerful soap bubbles.

Nour, (also spelled Noor, Nor, or Nur, Arabic: نور: Nūr IPA: [nuːr]) is a common Arabic unisex name signifying “light“ and “knowledge“.

A Modern Lens for a Historic Mind

You have probably never heard the extraordinary tale of Ibn al-Haytham, a remarkable scientist from an often-overlooked era of progress. Hidden within the sands of time, his remarkable journey through the realms of mathematics, astronomy and physics is a thrilling saga that captivates the imagination. With a fiery passion, he delved into the mysteries of the universe, daring to unravel its secrets. It was his daily observations of the sun’s movement across the rooftops as he traced the intricate curves and angles that held the potential to shape how we perceive the world, that exemplified his deep fascination with the enigmas of light. This fascination eventually led him to the groundbreaking discovery of spherical aberration. Just as al-Haytham was the first to note the existence of spherical aberrations, you will be the first to put spherical aberration control to the test with this creative lens.

Explore Three Levels of Spherical Aberration Control

Unlike most modern lenses prioritizing technical perfection over artistic expression, our lens is designed to take you on a creative journey. You no longer have to limit yourself to a single style. Using a dedicated spherical aberration control knob, users can seamlessly alternate between three levels of aberrations: soft, classic and bubble. Spherical aberration (SA) occurs when the light passing through the edges of a lens focuses closer to the lens than light passing through its center. One of the few aberrations that affect the entire frame, SA causes a gorgeous diffused haze and soft focus effect that causes the frame to ’glow’ when under-corrected. When corrected, it offers a sharp subject against a diffused backdrop, while over-correction results in an extremely sharp subject against a distinctive bubble bokeh backdrop.

Dive into Powerful Portraiture

An incredibly versatile tool, the 64 mm focal length grants flexibility to capture stunning images in various scenarios. Particularly powerful for unique portraits, at every aberration level and f-stop, skin textures are enhanced while maintaining a natural appearance with intricate details. Featuring an iris-style aperture mechanism and six signature special-shaped Lomography drop-in aperture plates for varied bokeh effects, photographers can achieve stand-out shots from as close as 0.6 m and switch between f/2.0 to f/16 in seconds. The unique spherical aberration control lets subjects shine with dramatic separation between the subject and backdrop.

Tell Your Own Story Through Impressive Cinematic Videography

The perfect addition to any filmmaker’s toolkit, the lens offers complete creative control over every scene. Using the aberration control knob, videographers can create powerful transitions, alternating between a soft-focus glow and a sharp three-dimensional effect featuring beautiful soap bubble bokeh. With silent stopless focus and aperture rings, as well as the option to add follow-focus gear rings, it gives total control over any shot to capture the essence of every moment, convey emotions and challenge the viewer with unexpected and stunning cinematographic effects created directly in-camera.

The images produced will have the character of both soft and classic bokeh levels, or of both classic and bubble bokeh levels.

How do I use the special aperture plates?
To insert and use the special shaped rear aperture plates, you will first need to unmount your lens, insert the desired aperture plate into the aperture plate slot, then re-mount your lens to continue shooting. We have ensured in design that the lens element will not get scratched when changing aperture plates.
