Instant Lomography - The Yone x Cheki Original Box

Yasumasa Yonehara aka Yone

Yone’s trademark is Cheki - Polaroid style- shots of sexy girls in provocative and playful poses. His distinctive approach has made him the master of new Ero-Kawa photography; eroticism and cuteness fused into one. On paper he is an unlikely playboy: 48, married, with a teenage daughter. However, Yone pulls it off with style!

Yone started using instant photography after seeing how Japanese schoolgirls carried around small photo albums full of instant pictures. They used these pictures to introduce themselves to new friends. The thought struck him that the way the photo was taken did not matter, it was only the content of the photo that was important. What was in those photos was their way of showing their peers who they were. Off the back of this, he started a magazine called Out of Photographers, to create a kind of photo book of Japanese society, by inviting people to send in their amateur photos.

The prime concern of Yone's photos is to catch what is Real. As a self-taught photographer, he isn't concerned with technique and convention. It's all about here and now. Using just an Instax camera, the available light or simply the flash to catch his subject, Yone creates a unique, raw authenticity. His casual sexy exhibitionism is an expression of the rising youth counter-culture rebellion against the traditional Japanese establishment. His models are generally girls between 18-24. He tries to capture the nonchalance and indifference youth culture shows to Japanese convention. In his eyes, the willingness of young women to exhibit their body shows their defiance against cultural norms.

The sexiness of Yone's work is equally popular with women as men. It is this quality that caught the eye of fashion magazines and companies like Urban Outfitters. The way Yone taps into 'sexy' in an unpretentious way makes his look unique and instant.
